Ellementt - The Bullshit feat. DJ Family Tyz

When the homey, and Harlem emcee, Ellementt sent me an email a while back (after posting this track) and told me that he was "sitting on quite a bit of CRAZY stuff that needs to be heard"...how could I turn him down. So he hit me up yesterday with this crack...er...track. Filthy! The Bullshit, is a track he did to a 9th Wonder production and will serve as the first single from his next mixtape. The mixtape (he didn't tell me a name or release date) will serve as an appetizer to his next album (no info either...Ellement, you're killin me) and will be released free to the masses. DJ Family Tyz on the 1s & 2s at the end of the track closes it out nicely. Pay attention kids, this is real spittin.

Capitol Hill Block Party 2010 Recap

It has taken me a few days to recover from the beating I took this past weekend at the Capitol Hill Block Party. Not a literal beating but it felt like my liver got jumped in a dark alley by King Hippo, Bald Bull, and Soda Popinski and my kidneys were in a gang fight with these clowns. Aside from that it was a great weekend for music of all genres and an even better showing for Seattle hip-hop.
The weekend started a little later on Friday than I would have liked as I totally missed Macklemore and just caught the end of Shabazz Palaces on the Main Stage. My need for sleep, unfortunately, over came my desire to get my ass to the party. We did, however, make it in early to the Champagne Champagne set at Neumos. Champagne has really grown on me over the past couple times seeing them perform and put on a great show.
Next up on the docket was the "Fantastic Four" hip-hop show, comprised of J.Pinder, Stay Hi Brothers, Candidt, and The Physics. J.Pinder was up first and rocked a nice set. This dude has so much potential and has really only begun. Word on the street is that he will be moving to Atlanta shortly to "further his music career". Good luck homey. Next up was Stay Hi Brothers (Vitamin D and Maineak) and brought about as much as you can expect...dope beats and good laid back, old school vibe. Check the video below as they performed their track Home from Jake One's "White Van Music".

Candidt, for me, was the wild card of the group. Yeah, yeah, I'm sleepin, I'm late whatever y'all wanna call it...I just wasn't that familiar with his music. Dude is hella funny on The Proof though, and I was interested to see/listen. I was definitely not disappointed. Candidt was energetic, his delivery was on point, and he had some "choreographed" segments in his show which totally kept my attention. Keep a lookout for Candidt's album "Sweatsuit & Churchshoes" droppin August 17th. I'll definitely check this one out. The Physics deliver in all forms. They rocked to a live band and turned out the final performance of the "Fantastic Four".

Saturday started off a bit more laid back at we hit HG Lodge (formerly The War Room) for the Members Only 1 year anniversary party. Man, I have to say that there isn't a whole lot better than sittin in the Seattle sun, eating free barbecue, sippin a cold $1 Pabst, and groovin to some of Seattle's best hip-hop artists. Canary Sing, Katie Kate, Victor Shade aka Ra Scion, Grynch, Luck One, Spaceman, and Cloud Nice (Jarv Dee, Helladope) all rocked the rooftop before we left to get back to the Block Party. I got a little snippet of Helladope (not sure what happened to the sound...eff technology) to give you an idea of the atmosphere up there. BIG shout out to Members Only...good stuff.

We bailed out on the remainder of the Members Only party to book it over to the Vera Stage for the "Hip-Hop Showcase featuring State of the Artist, Spaceman, and Grynch". Now I'll be the first to admit that I am not a big SOTA fan. Extrahelladope is a good track but, for me, that is really the beginning and the end. I will say though, that they did put on a good show...but when you're followed by Spaceman you need to step your game up.
What can I say about Space that I haven't already said...dude lives for the stage and to please the crowd. He wrings every ounce of energy out of that body every time. My guy always has time to chop it up before, after, and sometimes during a show. He's out there...but in a good way. Check out this video if you wanna see what I'm talking about.
Grynch is "Mr. Consistency" to me. When you see Grynch perform, much like Spaceman, you know what you're going to get every time...a good show. Less energetic than Space, Grynch commands an audience with his delivery and content rather than his presence and "swag" (I have grown to hate that word). As I looked around the buildings, I noticed that by the end Space and Grynch had people out on their patios, windows, and rooftops...around the VERA stage. Pretty impressive.

Atmosphere closed out the night on the Main Stage...admittedly I was too tired from the day to fight my way through the endless waves of people to get anywhere close to the stage. So we decided to stay back in the beer garden, sip cold ones, and enjoy not being impacted like an 80 year old colon and thus avoiding the stench of ass crack and elbow sweat. It was all good!

Continue after the break for day 3...

He did it again…

Part one of this epic tale was easily one of my favorite videos of recent time, but part 2?  Bambu has outdone himself here.  This video…well, my words won’t do it justice – or at least, you won’t care/remember them by the time your done watching this overall tremendous work of art:
If you haven’t taken the time to listen to the …paper cuts… EP, stop hating your eardrums…what’d they ever do to you?

Developing a cough…

What’s good y’all?  Just came across this one in the inbox – yes Benny, I check it too…sometimes – and felt compelled to share.  The group is W. Draztik (pronounced Dub-dot-Drastic) and Sleepy Biggs (pronounced…just like it fuckin’ looks!), and they’re part of the United States of Mind crew out in the Motor City.  I’ll be honest, I looked at it like “eh,” but thanks to some solid marketing copy, I gave it a listen.  I mean, how can you ignore this:

“Draztik's intense vocals and assaulting flow make for a potent and heady combo when  paired up with Sleepy's smoked-out production and crushing, live feel.  Built off samples from the grimiest crates Detroit has to offer, Smoker's Cough pays its respects to the freshness of the golden age, while blasting your eardrums (t0) the future now. “

DAYUM!  Who doesn’t like “intense” and “assaulting flow?”  And I have to imagine Detroit has some pret-ty damn grimy crates – hello, JD? – so if Sleepy found the “grimiest,” well sign me the fuck up!  You may think I’m being a smart ass, but I’m not.  That’s how the fuck you SELL!  But I digress…

I checked the video first.  “Smokers Intro” is the title track from Smokers Cough, the debut LP from these two USM cats.  Can’t lie, :30 seconds of cliche weed smokin’ into it and I’m like: “I just got bait-and-switched like a muhfucka!  Man, Cypress Hill been doing this shit for 20 GOT DAMN YEARS!!”  Luckily, I stuck it out and found out I was wrong.  Peep the video:

After being pleasantly surprised by Dub-Dot’s flow, and feelin’ the fuck outta Sleepy’s beats (PAUSE), I figured I had to listen to more of what these dudes have to offer.  As luck would have it, they have a three-track sampler from the LP you can download for free (here).  So I listened…twice.  Verdict?  Nice!

SmokersCough I moved on to the full LP, which you can listen to free here (or just stop being cheap and pay the $5 to download – do as they say, not as they do LOL).  Again, nice!  I feel like they’re a little raw sometimes, and it seems like Drastic gets a little lost in the beat sometimes, but overall I’m really diggin’ the sound of Smokers Cough

Go ahead then: go get “assaulted” by some “intense vocals,” and gig to some seriously “grimy” samples.  Or, if you’d rather, I’m sure I can find some MC Jihad, or Milli-a-Billi, or some other “iced-out” stupid shit from the inbox to sell you.  Just say the word!

Wale - Workin

I was reminded this morning as I checked my Facebook page that Wale had been missing for some time. Gone were the Twitter posts that transferred over to Facebook and made your own "Home" look like you were looking at Wale's "wall". This time around though it was nothing but good news. Wale announced a follow up to his 2008 "The Mixtape About Nothing" (get it here). Peep the video below and check for the mixtape "More About Nothing" on or around August 3rd.

Also hit the link for a new joint from the man himself. Apparently this will NOT be included in the new mixtape! Good to see dude gettin back to his mixtape roots!

Revalation & Strick 9 - EMS Is Ready

That dude Revelation sent through the first leak off his upcoming mixtape with Strick 9. EMS Is Ready is Rev and Strick goin over Beamer, Benz, or Bentley joint. The mixtape, "Commercial Poison", is touted as:
a combo of both their previous mixtapes "Commercial Interuption" & "Pick Ya Poison II" and highlights them going in over industry beats as only they can with some original joints sprinkled in along the way.The tape also reflects the current state of commercial Hip-Hop & the lack of originality these days.

Check it out below and expect another leak coming soon and the "Commercial Poison" mixtape in the near future!

Sponsorship needed now...

This IS a cry for help, haha...just playin. This is an announcement/reminder for those of you not in the know. I was reminded by the homey Deuce Quattro (DQ) (Subsoniq Co-Host) about this years Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, put on by Brooklyn Bodega, taking place July 5th-10th and featuring De La Soul as the headliner. This actually looks dope and I really wish that I could be there. Performers include the aforementioned De La as well as Dilated Peoples, Curren$y, Skyzoo, Black Milk, Diamond District, Smif-N-Wesson and many others (here is the full list). Not only are there shows but the festival also features "a week of programming including panels, movie screenings, & of course our Main Day performances & Family Day on Sat July 10th". A lot of good things being cooked up that week at the Bodega. Head over to their link above or check out their facebook page for more info. Oh, and DQ...we better get some good behind the scenes footage and interviews! Peace.

U-N-I - Lately (feat. Miguel) video

The video for U-N-I's Lately (featuring Miguel) debuted on MTV this week. The song is dope and so is the video. This one is still one of my favorites from the dudes though..Y-O, Thurz, and Fashawn killed that Pulp Fiction Part 1.  Peep the video below and go cop U-N-I and RO Blvd "A Love Supreme 2.0" here.

Brainstorm - Meant Nothing

Another from that dude Brainstorm (of Dyme Def), Meant Nothing produced by QBDaProblem (twitter). This is the latest track for his "Sun(Day) up to Sun(Day) down week" of promotion for their recently released "Sex Tape". Check the others here.

Scripts 'N Screwz - On 10 BTS video

Scripts and Screwz dropped off a little behind the scenes footage of their video shoot for On 10. They dropped the song a while back, I'm gonna leave a link to get it after the video. On 10 will serve as the first single to "The Hangover" due out later this year. It's funny cause I was watchin this thinkin "damn it looks HOT there"...but 104! Mmm mmm, not this guy!!!
